Nicecream and Bringing Peace back in the Home
Its moving week for us and while, this move hasn't been as stressful as some of our other moves… we still have our moments. One thing I've discovered during this process is that theres lots of foods I didn't know existed that are really easy to make WITH kids. I recently froze some bananas because it was taking forever for us to eat them. However when moving week came and we needed to empty out our freezer… we stumbled across a happy accident. An accident that is becoming an addiction and one has contributed in resetting the atmosphere of the home.
My oldest daughter is always asking to watch cooking videos and try new stuff…especially stuff that is naturally sweet. During our packing I realized that I could maybe use my food processor to make Nice Cream. But I was torn because…well…I though you had to have one of those Ninja makers? But my food processor is a Ninja…just an old one so the blade is very similar to the nice cream blade I think. Anyways, I shelved this thought in the back of my head.
Enter Monday: lots of fighting and meltdowns while trying to get our schooling done and packing boxes. I opened the freezer to grab meat or something and saw… the frozen bananas and decided to try it. I had just bought disposable snack cups and thought…maybe we can fulfill my oldest daughter dream of making homemade fro yo or nice cream or something. So I put the frozen bananas in the food processor….put some milk…found some coconut cream in my fridge and threw that in… then we added the mixins…peanut butter, cacao nibs and chocolate chips. We processed and scooped.
I was DEFINITELY skeptical. Until the first bite where it literally tasted like a dream and my kids begged to freeze more bananas and make it again the next day.
The thing with snack time in the afternoon is that I prefer something I call “interactive snacks”. Snacks that they can assemble or mix and just experiment with. Who knew… bananas and some pantry stuff could make pretty much ice cream.
This experience has provided me with an opportunity to reset, talk to my kids about their lives and read one of our kid novels together (Currently were reading The Gooseberry Park).
I dont know if all forms of Nice Cream are like this but its so fast and I now have a new appreciation for my food processor. I have especially enjoyed discussing my 2 year olds favorite flavors in it and well…watching her eat and savor every bite.
Its a time that has been really shifting our afternoons.
Maybe it will shift yours too when it all seems to fall apart.
Thanks for stopping by.
